Work is expected to commence shortly on the laneway linking the Rusheen Woods estate to the Barna Road.
Cllr Donal Lyons has welcomed the development in Knocknacarra saying that he understands that the stile at the end of Rusheen Woods estate is also to be widened as part of the upgrading works.
“This laneway is an important walkway permeability route used by residents of Rusheen Woods, Clybaun Heights, Knocknacarra Park, The Rise, Shangort, Shangort Park, Seacrest, Woodview Court and other estates to walk through Rusheen Woods estate onto the Barna Road leading to Gentian Hill and then onto the Back Promenade to Blackrock and then to the Salthill Promenade.”
Residents had expressed a number of concerns. “I use the walkway myself on a regular basis and am keenly aware that there was no public lighting on the part between the style at Rusheen Woods and the Barna Road,” Cllr Lyons added.
“I also had received many representations from residents who had expressed concerns about using the walkway after dark, while quite short, it is very secluded and people weren’t prepared to use it because of no public lighting. Also the surface is in need of upgrading.
“As the laneway is not taken in charge by Galway City Council, I found it difficult to progress the issue of upgrading it with officials. However, I am delighted that now under funding secured by officials in the Roads Department of Galway City Council from the National Transport Authority in seeking to increase walking and cycling initiatives in the city; the upgrade of the laneway has now qualified for national funding to increase permeability.”
Cllr Lyons is delighted that officials from the Galway City Council have secured funding to carry out improvements.
“I also very much welcome the works carried out recently by the Parks and Recreation Department Personnel of Galway City Council who did fantastic work in pruning back the trees in the Rusheen Woods estate adjoining the walkway,” Cllr Lyons says. “This work will further enhance the upgrading works due to commence shortly.
“I want to sincerely thank the officials at Galway City Council Roads Department for their help in securing the necessary funding from the National Transport Authority for the upgrade works, including the provision of public lighting, addressing my representations and concerns and for carrying out the work. It is very much appreciated.”
