Cllr Mike Cubbard is hoping to make a positive impact as a member of the Galway Sports Partnership steering committee.
At Monday’s meeting of the Galway City Council it was decided that Cllr Cubbard will represent the local authority.
“I am looking forward to taking up the position,” Cllr Cubbard says. “Having volunteered in grassroots sports since the age of 15 and being a qualified coach in football, basketball and volleyball, I know too well the benefits from participation in sport.
“Across all sports and codes, the girls’ game is growing. I look forward to working with the committee on behalf of my colleagues to continue this growth.”
Cllr Cubbard says that collaboration can take place with various departments in the city and county council.
“I believe we can do more in terms of collaboration with our local authority environment department where young people in áparticular are engaged in climate action and are as enthusiastic as ever around initiatives to move away from single use plastic bottles for example, which are a blight on all our green spaces which are enjoyed by so many young people across a variety of sports,” he says.
“I also want to have a positive impact in terms of mental well being and look to tie in many good initiatives to the partnership and its work.
“I want to compliment Cllr McDonnell for his work on the committee and look forward to hitting the ground running now.”
