Galway Public Libraries has announced the launch of ‘1922: Nora Barnacle & James Joyce: The Galway Story’, in conjunction with Dublin City Libraries and its One Dublin One Book Initiative.
This endeavour will take place on April 1 in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church at 6.30pm, featuring an evening of readings, conversation, and music highlighting Nora Barnacle, her life in Galway, and her role in the Joyce odyssey. Nora and James’ tale is one that evokes wonder; it is the story of an east-west couple who eloped, eventually leading fascinating lives in Europe.
At the event, Nuala O’Connor, author of Nora: A Love Story of Nora Barnacle and James Joyce will be in conversation with Ray Burke, author of Joyce Country. Ray’s book explores James Joyce’s connections to Galway, and has been re-issued earlier and facilitated by poet, Emily Cullen.
In collaboration with these authors, Galway Public Libraries have organised this event to celebrate Nora Barnacle, in her home city, Galway. This event also aims to commence the wonderful month-long programme that has been initiated by Dublin City Libraries for One Dublin One Book.
Nuala’s book, Nora, has been chosen by Dublin City Libraries for its One Dublin One Book initiative for 2022. It shares Nora’s perspective of the Joyce odyssey, while Joyce County focuses on Joyce’s point of view, and the significance of this story in the context of Galway. This collaboration between Nuala and Ray in conversation with Emily Cullen hopes to broaden attendees’ relationship with the Joyce family and their Galway connections.
Throughout the evening, music inspired by Nora will be played by Carmel Dempsey, Tomás Mannion, and Emil Greaney. Furthermore, a special premiere of the poem Nora Barnacle Speaks by Nuala O’Connor from the 1921 project, aims to enhance the evening’s celebration of this iconic couple.
