Galway gardai have an officer on duty at all times in the Eyre Square area, following recent calls for greater policing in the light of many serious incidents of criminality.
This week’s meeting of the the City Council Joint Policing Committee, comprising councillors, gardai, officials and activists heard that it is local garda policy to have a presence in the square at all times.
Supt Damien Flanagan was responding to a question from Cllr Alan Cheevers regarding the pollcing of the square and if Garda had any plan for it.
“The Eyre Square area has seen an escalation of crime and incidents in recent months. Should the City Council work with the gardai in order to instal a hugher grade of camera so as to get better evidence of these crimes,” said Cllr Cheevers.
Supt Flanagan said that currently, there is a fulltime presence of gardai in the Square.
“Regarding the cameras, we will work with Galway City Council and any enhancement of these we will welcome and support fully,” he said.
