Develop your passion for youth work at GCC

Do you have an interest in and an aptitude for working with young people? Would you like to learn about the challenges facing young people today? Then the Level 5 youth work course at Galway Community College is for you, as it will equip you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to advance in the youth work field.

The course focuses on the personal and social issues impacting young people in modern Irish society and their communities, such as social exclusion, culture, family breakdown, and addiction. It provides a broad introduction to youth work, developing personal qualities, knowledge, skills, and competencies required to pursue a career in the youth work and community development sectors.

Youth work has increased in importance in the past number of years and has become especially significant due to the Covid pandemic, which has been reflected in the Government allocating increased funding to the sector. There are employment opportunities in the youth services or community development sector such as youth leaders in youth clubs, sports clubs, and youth services, and community development work. Students may also gain entry to third level through the Higher Education Links Scheme.
