High speed traffic on Merlin Lane will lead to ‘a fatality’, warns Cheevers

Councillor calls on Gardaí, the Galway City Council, and Merlin Park Hospital to ‘take immediate action’

“Immediate action” must be taken to stop “high speed traffic” on Merlin Lane, “before we have a fatality”, a city councillor has warned.

Fianna Fáil Galway City East councillor, Alan Cheevers [pictured below], is calling on the gardaí, the Galway City Council, and the management of Merlin Park Hospital to come together to tackle the problem of high speed traffic on Merlin Lane. He said the speed feedback signs already in place are not enough.

.

“This road has become a rat run for commuters going through the hospital onto the Dublin Road,” he said. “I am seriously concerned as only last week we saw a vehicle loss control and damage the front wall of a house at Merlin Lane. Luckily there was no one injured, but we can’t see incidents like this happening again.”

Cllr Cheevers is proposing a barrier introduced at the back gate of the hospital which can only be accessed by Merlin Hospital staff. He also raised the issue at this week’s joint policing committee meeting.
