STREET VENDOR songs, St Brigid, Sicilian folk music, and the melodic percussion instrument, the gamelan, will all come together at the next Music for Galway concert.
Viola player Nathan Sherman and percussionist Alex Petcu will play a concert entitled ‘TOTEMIC’, at An Taibhdhearc, Middle Street, on Tuesday March 29 at 8pm.
Their varied and colourful programme will hear the world premiere of ‘Iarann’, a work inspired by St Brigid, by the Dutch-based Australian composer Kate Moore.
The duo will also play Luciano Berio’s ‘Naturale’, inspired by street vendor songs and Sicilian folk music; ‘TOTEMIC’ by Ian Wilson, which gives a new perspective on Irish folk; and the gamelan sounds of ‘One Thing I Know’ by Benedict Schlepper-Connolly.
An Irish musician of Romanian origin, Alex Petcu is establishing himself as a percussionist of the finest calibre, and he has performed as a soloist with both RTÉ orchestras and the Irish Chamber Orchestra.
Nathan Sherman is an American-born viola player and composer currently based in Dublin. He is a highly versatile performer and has recorded and broadcast with Ergodos, Crash Ensemble, Kirkos, and Evlana, and has premiered many works by Irish composers.
