€150,000 for safety improvements around Scoil Fhursa

Improvements to benefit pedestrians are planned on The Crescent, and the junction of Taylor’s Hill and St Marys Road

A total of €150,000 has been allocated to the Galway City Council for safety improvements in the area around Scoil Fhursa, Nile Lodge.

Improvements to benefit pedestrians are planned on The Crescent, and the junction of Taylor’s Hill and St Marys Road. It will also incorporate a number of interventions as part of the Scoil Iognáid Safe Routes to School Programme. All improvements are located adjacent to Scoil Fhursa.

The money has been allocated by the Department of Transport, and the Minister of State at that department, Fine Gael Galway West TD, Hildegarde Naughton [pictured below], has responsibility for the role out across the State of the Safe Routes to School Programme.

“The junction at Nile Lodge is exceptionally busy and these works are made even more important by the proximity of both Scoil Fhursa and Scoil Iognáid,” she said. “While Scoil Iognáid has already been included in the first round of Safe Routes to School, Scoil Fhursa has yet to be reached. However, given both schools are so close, it is important that works are carried out to improve access to both.”

The Government has committed €15 million to complete interventions at the 170 schools in Round One of the Safe Routes to School Programme. A total of 761 schools will come onto the programme on a rolling basis over the coming years.
