Funding of almost €250,000 has been announced for the protection and enhancement of 39 historic and protected buildings across Galway city and county.
The funding from the Government will go towards roof repairs, joinery repairs, lime rendering, and repair of protected windows on historic and protected buildings. In total, 15 projects in the city were allocated €122,700, and 24 projects across the county were allocated €126,400.
Buildings in Galway that will benefit from funding include St Ignatius Church, Sea Road, which was allocated €10,000 for external fixture repairs; and St Nicholas Collegiate Church, Lombard Street, which also received €10,000 for internal and external repairs.
Grants of up to €7,000 were also provided for six thatched houses for roof maintenance in Claregalway, Clarenbridge, Menlo, Corrandulla, and Headford.
Other local projects to receive funding include a number of historic properties on Montpelier Terrace and Ely Place on Sea Road, as well as the Druid Theatre building on Flood Street, which has been allocated €8,300 for roof repairs.

The Old Barracks on Main Street, Oughterard will benefit from an €8,000 grant for structural repairs, while €10,000 will be provided for external repairs of Galway Arts Centre on Lower Dominick Street.
A number of other properties on Dominick Street have been allocated funding for window repairs, and a residence on St Mary’s Terrace, Taylor’s Hill will benefit from a €4,000 grant for brickwork repairs.
The funding has been welcomed by the Minister of State, Hildegarde Naughton TD, who said: “This isn’t just about preserving our built heritage for future generations; it’s also about ensuring the continuation of traditional crafts that form an important part of our heritage.”
