Derelict houses should be CPOed to battle homelessness, says Flaherty-Klapp

It is hard to explain why people have to sleep rough when there are many derelict houses empty in the city, a local Green Party representative has said.

Stephanie Flaherty-Klapp said this week that, there is a multitude of such buildings that could be put to use to battle homelessness.

“While this country is in the midst of an unprecedented housing crisis, our city and county are littered with boarded up, derelict houses.

“Especially walking around Galway City East, I see a multitude of such buildings, which could be put to good use.

“It is impossible to explain to children why we see people sleeping rough when there are houses in good locations such as Riverside and on the Tuam Road standing empty.

“If we can issue CPOs to build more roads, why not to create homes for people who desperately need them,” she said.

Galway city to get Pride pedestrian crossing

Pride rainbow markings will be installed by the Galway City Council on the pedestrian crossing on Bridge Street.

This will involve painting the pedestrian crossing in stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet, to represent the LGBT+ pride flag.

City Hall had considered the Pride crossing at Cross Street crossing, but felt the safer option was to install the markings along a controlled crossing rather than an uncontrolled crossing.

The marking will be similar to the Rainbow crossing installed in Wicklow and also in Limerick recently by Smarter Travel. The Rainbow line marking will be carried out within the next two weeks.

Labour Galway City West councillor, Niall McNelis, has welcomed the installation as a positive and inclusive move by the Galway City Council. “This is something I’ve been raising,” he said, “and I’m delighted that is now going to happen.”
