O’Flaherty motion sees Ballyloughane toilets open at weekends

Cllr Terry O’Flaherty’s motion proposing that the Galway City Council opens toilets at Ballyloughane on Saturdays and Sundays with immediate effect was carried.

At Monday’s meeting of the Galway City Council, Cllr O’Flaherty raised concern that the facility is closed at weekends.

“The closure of the toilets in Ballyloughane every weekend, it is madness when you have the biggest crowds on Saturday and Sunday,” she said during the meeting.

“I’m asking for the toilets to be open at weekends, it is bad enough we don’t have changing shelters.

“There isn’t a squeak about them in Ballyloughane. People old and young are changing clothes out of the boot of cars. I want that shelter put in for this.”

Cllr Alan Cheevers also spoke about the issue. “I feel we are the poor relation,” he said about the east side of Galway city.

“Why the toilets are closed at the weekends is an absolute disgrace. They should be open to the general public. It is vital we have disability toilets and toilets for the general public.”
