Change of speed limit with no consultation ‘unacceptable’, says Cheevers

Councillor calls for ‘proper consultation’ with many motorists determined to appeal their fines

It is “unacceptable” that motorists are being fined for speeding on the Oranmore coast road, when the speed limit was changed from 80km to 50km, “without proper notice to motorists”.

This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway City East councillor, Alan Cheevers, who has received “numerous representations” from people in the area who have been “caught and issued fines”.

“No notice was given of the change,” he said. “The 50km speed limit appeared overnight without notice. I am all for reducing speed for the safety of motorists, cyclists, and walkers but there needs to be proper consultation with residents when reducing speed limits.”
