THE GALWAY Arts Centre is hosting a series of travel and ocean themed exhibitions and events to coincide with the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in the city.
In Search Of Utopia, a group exhibition featuring Dorothy Cross, Ailbhe Ni Bhriaini, Louise Manifold, Sean Lynch, and Cao Fei is currently on show in the Nuns Island Theatre for the duration of the Volvo Ocean Race stopover.
Today sees the opening of the exhibition The World Shrinks For Those Who Own It, featuring new work by Galway’s Jim Ricks and Frankfurt’s Oliver Heinzenberger. It explores the differences in people’s movement; for some travel is a luxury and recreational, where for others it marks dangerous and often illegal crossing of borders in search of a better life elsewhere.
The arts centre will host a fun family day on Saturday from 2.30pm to 5pm on Ladies Beach, Salthill. Artist Michelle Browne will host a performance involving singers, a boat, and radio transmissions, entitled In Search of the Miraculous.
Bring your bucket and spade as these genres will be the soundtrack to the sandcastle building competition. Wow the panel of judges with your inspired sand sculptures and you could win an array of prizes from local Salthill businesses.
Registration is free and there is a maximum of five per team with two categories: family with a minimum of one adult and an over 16s category.
While building sandcastles, you can chill out to the sounds of the Mr Whippy Soundsystem, a 1970s ice-cream van converted into a DJ booth where Will Softly and Ben O’Faolain spin reggae, Latin, dub, disco, and Afrobeat.
