Athenry Golf Club is to benefit from the Government’s new funding package for community sports.
The club’s application received a grant approval of €150,000 from the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme which has announced €144 million in grants to 1,900 applications across a wide range of sporting activities throughout the country. Projects in County Galway will receive grants worth €10 million overall, while another €6 million is in reserve for re-applications for unsuccessful projects.
Club Captain Peter Sheedy says the money received will be used for “specific projects that include improvements to the Sprinkler System, construction of new tee boxes and a new water reservation tank for our irrigation system.”
“In this, the 120th year of the club, members have always shown an exceptional level of financial support over the decades. More recently a crucially required Course Drainage project was successfully completed in 2018 at a cost of €260k, funded by member contributions.”
Lady Captain Mary Tarmey, in welcoming the news, says Athenry Golf Club has a “remarkably proactive track record in attracting females of all ages, particularly through the Starting in/Getting into Golf programmes”.
Fianna Fail’s Cllr Donagh Killilea has welcomed €1.3m capital sports funding for the Tuam area, with Tuam Stadium receiving a long awaited boost of €300k for its redevelopment.
