The Irish Osteoporosis Society and International Pelvic Physiotherapy Management are jointly running a seminar for the general public on Osteoporosis and Pelvic Floor Muscle Dysfunction. The seminar will be held in the Ardilaun Hotel, Taylor’s Hill, Galway on Friday February 25 from 7-9pm.
There will be three speakers on the night, Ms Michele O’Brien, CEO, The Irish Osteoporosis Society, Ms Aoife Ni Eochaidh, Chartered Physiotherapist, International Pelvic Physiotherapy Management, and Prof Moira O’Brien, President, The Irish Osteoporosis Society.
This seminar is for anyone with an interest in Bone Health and Pelvic Floor Muscle Dysfunction.
Prof Moira O’Brien FRCPI, FFSEM, FFSEM (UK ), FFSEM (Hon UK ), FTCD, FECSS, MA, was born in Malaysia, to parents who were TCD Medical graduates. She is Emeritus Professor of Anatomy at Trinity College Dublin; she is the first full time female Professor in the medical facility in TCD.
She continues to work and is currently the only Osteoporosis consultant in Ireland, and Sports Medicine Consultant at Affidea, Dundrum. She was a member of the European Olympic Medical Commission and Board of the Federation International Medicine Sportive. Founder and President of the Irish Osteoporosis Society in 1996-Present, the founder of the Irish Menopause Society in 1994 and Member of the European Union Osteoporosis Interest Group on Osteoporosis.
Prof O’Brien was a founding Fellow of RCPI/RCSI Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine, she was the Irish Olympic Medical Officer to the Irish team at the Moscow, Los Angeles and the Seoul Olympic games. She was the Medical Director of the first Masters in Sports Medicine in Great Britain and Ireland based at Trinity College Dublin in 1990 to 2005 and is the Honorary Medical Director from 2006 to present, she has been involved in Sports Medicine for over 40 years.
Author of numerous publications, books and articles on osteoporosis and sports Medicine and an invited keynote speaker at international conferences world-wide. In 2015, Prof O’Brien was awarded the Sir Roger Bannister Medal by BASEM to recognise her outstanding contribution to the field of Sports and Exercise Medicine. That same year she was also the recipient of the First Lifetime Achievement award in Osteoporosis by the Irish Osteoporosis Society. The following year, in 2016, she received the First Lifetime Achievement award in Sports and Exercise Medicine by the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine. She was awarded the distinguished graduate award by RCSI in 2020 and she received the Irish Healthcare awards Lifetime achievement award in 2020.
Aoife Ni Eochaidh qualified as a physiotherapist in 1995 from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. She developed an interest in men and women’s health early in her career and went on to complete a postgraduate Certificate in Women’s Health Physiotherapy from the University of Bradford in 2000. Aoife regularly attends Local, National and World meetings in the field of Men and Women’s Health & Continence Physiotherapy, often as an invited speaker herself. She is a multi-award-winning physiotherapist, and has worked in Scotland, Belgium, Australia and in Irish Public and private Hospitals.
She set up a private Men & Women’s Health Physiotherapy practice in Galway in 1999 and runs her clinic now from the Bon Secours Consultant Clinic in Galway. Aoife provides expert physiotherapy assessment and treatment for Men & Women with pelvic floor muscle dysfunctions including, Incontinence (Bladder & Bowel ), Pelvic Organ Prolapse, Obstructed Defecation, Pelvic Pain, Sexual Dysfunction and Osteoporosis. Aoife uses innovative technology approaches with her patients to ensure optimal results. Aoife says no amount of leakage is normal, and a 100-year-old muscle can be trained! Pelvic Floor Muscle problems are truly awful, but with pelvic floor muscle training the results are great!
