GAAW to screen Killing Kelly documentary

Galway peace group to mark its 20th anniversary

Galway peace group, the Galway Alliance Against War, will mark its 20th anniversary with the screening of the documentary, Killing Kelly.

Killing Kelly, scripted by controversial Scottish politician George Galloway, and directed by Seán A Murray (Unquiet Graves ), will be screened in Richardson’s. Eyre Square, tomorrow, Friday February 11, at 8pm.

Killing Kelly examines the suspicious death of the British chemical weapons expert, Dr David Kelly, at a time when Tony Blair and George W Bush were in the midst of their invasion of Iraq.

In 2003, Blair’s government waged war on the basis of a “dodgy dossier” that falsely claimed Saddam Hussein’s Iraq was in possession of weapons of mass destruction.

Dr Kelly knew the truth and leaked it to the BBC which revealed the government had "sexed up" the intelligence it presented to justify the war. Dr Kelly was outed as the whistle-blower. Days later he was dead. This film is a detailed look at the circumstances of Dr Kelly's death and the subsequent cover-up that followed.

Speaking about its anniversary a GAAW spokesperson said: “Twenty years on from our foundation the US is once again on the brink of another war. Again we argue that the present tension between Washington/NATO and Moscow can be resolved through dialogue. Indeed, there is the Minsk II agreement already in place, which if implemented can help to settle this conflict.”

Admission to the documentary screening is free.
