There has been a 'marked increase' in burglaries in Galway, Monday's online meeting of the Galway County Council Joint Policing Committee was told.
According to Chief Superintendent Tom Curley, there was a 12 per cent increase in burglaries in 2021 compared to the previous years and local gardaí have noticed some trends.
"With the economy opening back up there has been a marked increase in East Galway and Tuam," Chief Superintendent Curley said. "We are working with the national units as regards intelligence, members of the public need to take extra precautions."
Gangs are targeting properties according to the Chief Superintendent. "People are sizing up where there are no alarms and breaking in at will," he added. "The most vulnerable time is Thursday between 12 and 7 in the evening, that is what our analysis shows."
