St Patrick’s Day Festival to return to the city streets

Galway City Council is calling for applications for involvement in this year’s carnival themed parade

The St Patrick’s Day parade makes its long awaited return to the streets of Galway city in March, and this year’s festivities will include an outdoor village, family activities, vintage amusements, and a new ‘Greening’ initiative.

The Galway City Council is calling for applications for involvement in this year’s parade, which will be held on Thursday March 17. The parade will have a carnival atmosphere, and entries involving costumes, performance, audience interaction, and musical accompaniment, are strongly encouraged.

After consultation with the emergency services, the parade will begin at Galway Cathedral, before making its way along University Road, onto the Salmon Weir Bridge, and turning right onto Eglinton Street. It will then proceed along Williamsgate Street and past the official viewing stand in Eyre Square before finishing on Prospect Hill and Bóthar na mBan.

“As the majority of Covid-19 restrictions are eased,” said Patricia Philbin, director of services for the Galway City Council, “the St. Patrick’s Day Festival will be one of the first real opportunities to gather together and celebrate as a community once again and put on display the vast abundance of creative and artistic ability in Galway. We are encouraging as many groups as possible to get involved.”

Deadline for applications is February 21 2022 and should be submitted to [email protected] or [email protected]. Application forms are available via https://www.galwaycity.ie/application-forms
