The Galway FA premier division makes a welcome return this weekend with several important games on the agenda.
A number of clubs involved were in Connacht Junior Cup action as Corrib Rangers enjoyed a splendid penalty shootout success over Westport United.
That result was a significant boost for Jimmy Jennings’ outfit, who have a crucial away match against Colemanstown United on Saturday.
Considering four teams will be relegated the stakes will be piled high for Colemanstown and Rangers, who were inspired in Westport by the impressive Hamza Celik.
Jennings, Kevin Fitzpatrick, Gary Martin, Conor Cooke, and Aaron Daly converted spot kicks after the match finished 2-2.
Table toppers Athenry enjoyed a 3-1 success over Ballyheane with former Galway United winger Gary Shanahan, Colm O’Donovan, and Ray Moran scoring. In the league Athenry face a tricky test away to Tuam Celtic tomorrow.
Another Friday fixture takes place in Drom with Salthill Devon hosting Maree-Oranmore. Salthill proved too strong for Straide & Foxford in the Connacht Junior Cup with Aaron Conway, Timmy Molloy, Shane O’Rourke, Jackson Da Silva, and Lucas netting in a 5-2 triumph.
On Sunday morning Noel McDonnell’s Mervue United travel to Annaghdown for a game against Corrib Celtic. Mervue advanced in the provincial competition eventually shrugging off Cregmore-Claregalway’s spirited resistance as Lewis Waweru and Adam Healy struck goals.
Galway Hibernians, managed by Stephen Walsh, overcame Colemanstown on penalties, but now have a clash with St Bernard’s on the agenda.
In O’Connor Park William Grant’s West United, who had been in decent form before Christmas, face Loughrea.
