The Pollnarooma Residents Association is opposing the temporary cycleway in Salthill.
On Tuesday in an attempt to generate data residents recorded the traffic eastbound and westbound at the Pollnarooma West junction on the R336 from 8am until 7pm.
A total of 5,437 cars travelled eastbound with 5,480 westbound with the residents highlighting the ‘significantly increased traffic congestion and risk of accident around Salerno, St Enda’s, and Taylor’s Hill schools’.
In a detailed document sent to the Galway City Council the Pollnarooma Residents Association outlined a number of reasons why they objected including the negative impact on emergency services, impact on traffic congestion in the estate, and how local businesses will be affected.
The document said: “Proposal A and B entail comprehensive change and have been presented without proper assessment of risk and review of appropriate data.
“A motion was passed in a meeting last September 2021 at Galway City Council by Galway City Councillors to approve proceeding without them having an appropriate debate on the assessment of risk and review of data.
“Additionally the city council only met with Emergency Services to brief them on the impact of the proposed changes to the road network on January 24.
“The Prom and its various amenities adds to life in Galway. The proposal will reduce certain cohorts of the community access to these amenities.
“In summary, in light of high risk to public safety, the significant negative impact to local businesses and also to the environment we are completely opposed to both proposals. We believe both proposals are unjust and very poorly thought out.”
