Lomboto makes a welcome return

Francely Lomboto scored in Sunday's friendly win against Finn Harps

The smile etched across Francely Lomboto’s face told the tale. Children were looking for autographs in Ballinderreen after Lomboto pounced to score the only goal in Galway United’s friendly win over Finn Harps on Sunday.

Lomboto, who suffered a serious leg injury in United’s last 2021 pre-season fixture against Wexford, announced his return with a goal. “It feels good to be back after a long 10, 11 months,” Lomboto says. “So I'm happy out to get a goal.”

Undoubtedly it was a demanding spell for Lomboto, who had been motoring smoothly before breaking a leg against Wexford at St Mochta’s. “It was a tough day, it was tough to take, especially when it was up in Dublin,” Lomboto recalls.

That Lomboto had been so prominent at the time added to the disappointment. “I was flying and I was getting used to the style of play, when I was playing up top,” he says.

Family and friends, though, offered significant support with Lomboto acknowledging John Caulfield’s influence too.

“It was hard to take, but thank God the people I had around me at the time,” he adds. “Otherwise I don't know what would have happened. The gaffer, my mum at home, everyone - I would just like to thank them anyways.

“I really appreciate the fans too for cheering me on, helping me get through the injury - I am just glad to be back.”

Lomboto returned to training at the end of last year. “I was back training just a bit before the play-offs,” Lomboto says. “I wasn't doing full contact, but I was back then in full contact about a week and a half before the final game of the season. I was hoping to get in, but I am back now. I am happy out, I am glad to be back to help the boys to try to reach our goal this year.”

So promotion remains the aim? “Of course, nothing less,” he replies. Lomboto is ready, willing, and able to occupy a central role.
