Cllr Niall Murphy is satisfied that the Galway City Council has committed to audit the public realm for accessibility for people with disabilities.
This decision is a result of a motion by Cllr Murphy which updates the Draft City Development Plan.
The objective to be added to the plan is to carry out an audit of existing roads and public realm spaces in Galway in order to itemise in priority order the specific locations which need to be modified to improve accessibility.
Cllr Murphy said: “While the council has always given priority to issues around accessibility, a general audit will help us assess any public areas that have fallen behind.
“Our streets and many of the regulations have changed since 2005, so a fresh view will identify opportunities to improve. Issues such as badly positioned bollards, narrow or uneven footpaths or the need for a dished kerb can reduce accessibility.”
He concluded: “When the disabled community participate in our public spaces, it is important that they do not face physical barriers to access.”
