Temporary cycleway will a 'disaster' says Village Salthill group

Business group says cycleway will removing a large amount of parking and driving traffic into and through residential areas in the height of the tourist season

The Village Salthill group believes the proposed temporary cycleway will be a disaster for the area.

Welcoming the public consultation process initiated by the executive of the Galway City Council, the Village Salthill, a local business owners group will engage with councillors.

"We have maintained right from the outset that this temporary arrangement would be a disaster for Salthill – removing a large amount of parking and driving traffic into and through residential areas in the height of the tourist season," the statement read.

Not opposed to cycleway

.

"The notion of having a properly constructed cycleway in Salthill has never been opposed by the Village group – however we are concerned that any ill thought-out and hastily planned solution will lead to chaos, bad feeling and seriously affect a number of businesses who rely on nearby parking to facilitate their customers.

“It is our intention to engage with the area councillors and indeed all the councillors to reinforce the mayhem that would ensue should this proposal go ahead. Additionally we will be consulting with, not only, the residents groups who are directly affected but the areas that will feel the ‘concertina effect’ of scrambling for parking spaces.”

The Village group has been in contact with the Galway City Council about some issues. "We would like to acknowledge the prompt response from the city council when we made representations to include the option to preserve the status quo along the promenade," the statement adds.

"We further welcome the corrections, and the portal requiring a ‘re-advertising’ in this week’s local media and the extended period for response. We would encourage everybody to have their say on this issue – there is an option to make your feelings felt in writing, if the portal is not something people comfortable are with," the statement read.
