TOM STOPPARD’S latest play Leopoldstadt, and the Bolshoi Ballet’s production of Jewels will be on screen at the Eye Cinema this month.
Britain’s National Theatre Live season returns to the EYE with Leopoldstadt on Thursday January 27 at 5.45pm - and filmed live on stage in London’s West End. Written by Tom Stoppard, who The Times called “Britain’s greatest living playwright”, this is a passionate drama of love, family and endurance.
Set in the Jewish quarter of Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century, it focusses on Hermann Merz - a factory owner and baptised Jew, now married to Catholic Gretl - and family’s story across half a century, passing through the convulsions of war, revolution, impoverishment, annexation by Nazi Germany, and the Holocaust.A night at the ballet
The first live broadcast of 2022 from the Bolshoi Ballet is its production of Jewels on Sunday January 23 at 3pm.
Emeralds for the elegance and sophistication of Paris, rubies for the speed and modernity of New York, and diamonds for an imperial St Petersburg, accompanied by the music of Gabriel Fauré, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky, with choreography by George Balanchine.This glamorous triptych was inspired by Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue. It was created as an homage to the cities and dance schools of Paris, New York, and St Petersburg that made a vital impact on the revered choreographer’s career.
