The increase in toll charges, which came into effect on January 1, were “ill timed, unfair, and are adding further costs” to already “hard-hit motorists”.
This is the view of Independent Galway East TD, Seán Canney, who was reacting to the 10 cent rise in toll rates across most public private partnership toll roads. The M4, M1, N6, M17/18, N25, Waterford Bridge, and Limerick Tunnel will all see increases in the charge. He said this represents an increase of more than 5.3 per cent.
“At a time when fuel prices are at an all-time high and insurance costs are increasing, this increase is adding further costs to motorists,” he said. “It is also ironic that these increases are coming when all tolls are not now manned, and are operating on a card only basis, with substantial savings in wages for these private toll operators.”
