Covid calls a halt to basketball league

National League basketball action has been thrown into turmoil with a host of Covid cancellations.

In the Superleague Moycullen has been hit hard - they have not been in action since mid December with games forced to be cancelled, and now have three matches still to play to catch up with the schedule.

NUIG Maree have fared better and produced a 102-92 win over Kilorglin during the Christmas period after their 96-83 loss to DBS Eanna. it was the only one of two National League games to take place.

According to Basketball Ireland, 18 of the 20 National League fixtures, including the women's games, have been cancelled over the holiday period.

National League manager John Walsh says Basketball Ireland knew that with numbers of Covid-19 cases spreading, the postponements were likely.

"Our primary concern is the welfare of all involved - players, coaches, officials and fans. We will be working with all the stakehokers involved to get these games rescheduled at the another stage."

There also also doubts if the next scheduled games on January 15 will take place. NUIG Maree are due to host Bright DCU Saints, while Moycullen away to Griffith College Templeogue,
