Sung Latin Mass to be celebrated in city on Christmas Day

At 3pm on Christmas Day a sung traditional Latin mass will be celebrated in the Chapel of St Mary’s College, St Mary’s Road.

The traditional Latin mass has been celebrated weekly in Galway since 2012 by the priests of the Institute of Christ the King, and since August 2020, with the gracious assistance of the College and Diocesan authorities, the mass has been celebrated on Sundays at 3pm in St Mary’s College Chapel.

The Institute of Christ the King, which was founded in 1990, has been growing steadily throughout the world, attracting many vocations to the priesthood. It is a young community, with the average age of its seminarians being 24, and 39 for priests.

The priests of the Institute have had a presence in Limerick since 2006, where it has more recently purchased, and undertaken an extensive renovation of, the Sacred Heart Church. The Institute also has a permanent apostolate in Belfast.

Music at the mass in Galway is provided by a small choir which sings Gregorian chant, sacred choral music and traditional hymns. New members are invited to attend this mass any Sunday at 3pm, but a special invitation is extended for Christmas Day.
