A five-year plan is vital if “crumbling roads” in some of the oldest areas of Galway are to be brought “up to date”.
This is the view of Independent Galway City East councillor, Declan McDonnell, who is calling on officials in the Galway City Council to make such a plan for Bohermore, Shantalla, and The Claddagh, and that money be set aside in each annual budget for the required works.
Cllr McDonnell was instrumental in securing funding of €70,000 for road repairs in Old Mervue, and now wants to see similar works in the other older areas of the city. “The roads in these old estates have hardly been touched since they were built 70 years ago and are badly in need of attention,” he said.
Riverside, Renmore, and Corrib Park
He said once the works have been carried out in Shantalla, etc, a similar five-year plan should be put in place for road improvements in Riverside, Renmore, and Corrib Park.
While he welcomed the council’s recent improvement works to footpaths in Riverside, he said it was “important we continue to have rolling programmes like that, planning these kinds of works in advance, so the roads don’t fall into such disrepair again.”
