Disabled drivers to suffer further delays as appeals board members resign

Dep Sean Canney says situation is “totally unfair” and is “not the way to treat people with a disability”

Galwegians awaiting decisions or appeals hearings by the Disabled Drivers and Disabled Passenger Tax Concession Appeals Board will suffer further delays.

The delays are a result of resignations by medical appeals board members. The Department of Health and Finance are now working to appoint members to a new appeals board.

According to Independent Galway East TD, Sean Canney [pictured below], this will result in further delays to the processing of appeals.

“I have constituents waiting up to two years for an appeal to be heard,” he said. “This is totally unfair on people with a disability to have to wait for such a long time.”

Dep Canney said he would raise this issue at the next meeting of the Oireachtas’ Disability Matters Committee. “This is not the way,” he said, “ to treat people with a disability.”
