Fine Gael Deputy Ciaran Cannon has welcomed an allocation of just under €1m in funding for outdoor recreation projects across Co. Galway. The funding announcement has been made this week by Rural Affairs Minister Heather Humphreys as part of the national Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.
The grant awards for Co. Galway include:
€500,000 for the development of a new 2.4km Portumna Blueway leisure route to include trail construction, signage, sculptures and other works.
€200,000 for the regeneration of trails and recreational areas at the Woodford Millennium Oak Forest
€183,000 to upgrade the existing Atlantic Waterfall Walk at Letterfrack.
€50,000 to begin the design and planning process for a major upgrade of the recreational facilities at The Long Point on Loughrea Lake.
Welcoming the funding, Deputy Ciaran Cannon said that these investments would provide for the delivery of superb amenities for rural communities across Co. Galway.
“This investment of a million euro will provide for the development of really superb amenities to serve a number of rural communities across our county. The Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme was introduced to develop and enhance rural amenities, thus making our rural communities more attractive places to live in and to visit”, said Deputy Cannon.
“In addition, having access to these excellent amenities will promote active and healthy lifestyles, as well as boosting tourism and economic activity in each location. I’m grateful to Minister Heather Humphreys for making these far-seeing investments and to the staff of Galway Co. Council for making a superb funding application,” concluded Deputy Cannon.
