Cllr Alan Cheevers says money should have been allocated to enhance lighting at Ballyloughane and the Liam Mellows walkway.
Cheevers highlighted the issue at Monday’s Galway City budget meeting.
“I want to see the same level of ambition that has been seen at walkways at South Park and Salthill at Ballyloughane. We have seen stand up lighting at both of these locations that has seriously improved the safety of walkers and cyclists using these amenities,” he said.
“I find that on the east side of the city we seem to be left behind. I think we need to be redistributing money across the board.
“We are elected to represent the people, I believe distribution should be equally shared out. I would like to see what is the masterplan for Castle Park and Doughiska.
“The people of these areas, no more than South Park, we need something to happen with them. The likes of Ballyloughane we need to see proper lighting so people can use the walkway. We have an older population in Renmore, who deserve the same safety and lighting as other parts of the city.”
Galway City Council chief executive Brendan McGrath indicated that the council will try to secure funding to improve lighting in the area.
Cllr Cheevers remains hopeful that the town centre can be linked with Roscam.
He concluded: “I welcome the new 1.2 km of walkway that has been developed in Ballyloughane as part of the Liam Mellows GAA development project I think we can also see this developed over time linking to city and Roscam.”
