Exciting Galway FA premier division campaign

Mervue and West drew 2-2 on Friday at Fahy's Field

A highly competitive Galway FA premier division continues perfectly illustrated by Friday’s eventful draw 2-2 between Mervue United and West United at Fahy’s Field.

Full blooded and competitive, played in front of a large crowd, the spoils were eventually shared at the end of a lively encounter.

The prolific Enda Curran confidently converted a late penalty for Mervue following a Colm Power foul on Lewis Waweru. That earned Mervue a point, but West, who have been without some key performers recently, contributed to an action packed match.

James Ryan and Ronan Caldwell netted for West with Curran’s brace bringing his account to 14 in eight matches.

Across town in Drom Salthill Devon carried out their business with cool authority cruising to a comfortable 4-0 success over Tuam Celtic.

Rory Brennan, Aaron Conway, and Mikey Fox (2 ) struck for Victor Collins’ outfit, who remain on top of the table, but they have played two more fixtures than Athenry.

Seamie Crowe’s side have a 100 per cent record so far proving too strong for Corrib Rangers on Saturday as the champions won 4-1.

Ryan Shaughnessy (2 ), Ray Moran, and Colm O’Donovan scored for Athenry with Hamza Celik on target for Rangers.

The stakes were piled high for Colemanstown and Loughrea too with the visitors registering an important 7-2 triumph.

Daryl Hayden, who remains a potent threat for Loughrea, delivered a hat-trick, while Kieran Bane (2 ), Shane Corrigan, and Jamie Daniels also scored. Thady Moran and Thomas Carr scored for Colemanstown. Ciaran Nugent and Caimin Rooney traded goals in Corrib Celtic's and Galway Hibernians 1-1 draw.

This weekend the Connacht Junior Cup takes centre stage with some attractive fixtures on the agenda throughout the province.
