Councillors have expressed concern about the "significant delays" to the planned construction of tennis courts in Galway city.
At Monday's meeting of the Galway City Council, the issue was initially raised by Cllr Alan Cheevers, who asked for an update on the proposed works. "I believe they were to have started in August last year," he said. "I have had feedback from tennis clubs and members, they want clarity on it."
Director of services Dermot Mahon responded that courts were due to be completed in January.
Carmel Kilcoyne, Galway City Council senior planner, added that work was due to commence on November 1, but the contractor was not on site so the project was 'seriously delayed.'
Cllr Mike Cubbard subsequently spoke about the situation asking for a start date and adding the situation was 'beyond frustrating'.

Cllr Cheevers [pictured above] asked was there a penalty clause for contractors if they did not get on site. "Our communities in every area of the city need the services," Cllr Cheevers said.
Mayor Colette Connolly also discussed the matter with Brendan McGrath, chief executive of the Galway City Council, acknowledging it was 'hugely frustrating' and that 'we had hoped the work would be underway by now, I'm anxious and the team is anxious that this will go ahead."
