GALWAY BASED artists Sacha Hutchinson and Ger O’Rourke are currently displaying their latest work, featuring coastal birds and geese, in the Renzo Café, Eyre Street.
Hutchinson’s work [an example of which is below], in pen, collage, gouache and oil paint, looks at the birds commonly found along the shores of Galway Bay, but the works also have a conservationist theme running through them.
“As their numbers continue to fall,” she said, “I am more aware of the importance of their protection from the dangers of plastic pollution, habitat loss, overfishing, and climate change.”
.
O’Rourke’s new collection is a series of mixed media paintings taken from “ordinary subjects that caught my eye”, including geese.
“Sacred to the goddess Jono, a flock of geese in her temple noticed a troop of Gauls sneaking up the hill to attack Rome warning the roman soldiers of danger with their honking & crackling,” she said. “Geese are still used as guard animals in many parts of the world today.”
