Galway WFC U19s claim double

It was a brilliant week for Phil Trill's team

GALWAY WFC 1 DLR WAVES 0

Fortune favours the brave with Galway WFC U19s completing an impressive double at Eamonn Deacy Park on Sunday evening.

DLR Waves were admirably defiant throughout a keenly contested match, but Galway found a way to win. Just about.

Chances were scarce during a tight first half with DLR Waves unfortunate not to hit the front when Oleta Griffin's free kick struck the woodwork.

Galway WFC's Abbie Callanan was thwarted by a brave challenge from Nicole Keogh as the interval approached with the teams eventually departing deadlocked.

It was similarly tense after the restart, but DLR were reduced to 10 players when Jodie McQuillan handled on the line following an Aoibheann Costello header. From the resultant spot kick Abbie Callanan's effort was saved by the brilliant Rugile Auskalynte.

In extra-time Galway continued to probe with a goal eventually arriving in the 115th minute. Costello and Callanan combined with substitute Rola Olusola's effort taking a wicked deflection off Oleta Griffin, who had been splendid at the back for DLR.

A Galway league and cup double was secured.
