Covid causes move away from public transport

Some two in five people (41 per cent ) say they are less likely to use public transport now compared to before the pandemic, and four per cent said they are more likely to use it now.

These are the findings of a poll of 8,241 people AA Ireland says that it carried out in September.

When asked in the poll what their preferred mode of transport was now compared to before the pandemic, 31 per cent of motorists (close to one in three ) said they are more likely to drive now, while 34 per cent say they are more likely to walk to their destination.

Anna Cullen from AA Ireland says public transport use is being encouraged now more than ever, as seen with the recent Budget announcement of a youth travel card for 19 to 23 year-olds. However, changing the attitude of the public may be a slow process, as some people are still hesitant to travel on public transport, post Covid.

AA Ireland also asked those surveyed if they intended to travel abroad next year. Sixty per cent of people said they did intend to travel abroad next year, 12 per cent said they would travel within Ireland, while six per cent said they were not planning to travel at all.
