Close to 1000 metres of new drinking water infrastructure for Salthill

New piping to be installed in Salthill by Irish water between November and February

More than 200 metres of cast iron piping in Lenaboy Gardens, Salthill, is due to be replaced in the coming weeks, as are more than 772 meters of piping in Dalysfort Road in January.

Replacement of piping in the public drinking water infrastructure of Salthill has been described as “very welcome and not beyond time” by Fianna Fail Galway City West councillor, John Connolly.

A total of 210 metres of cast iron piping is to be replaced in Lenaboy Gardens. Over the past year, sampling of the water there showed an iron reading of seven times the acceptable level in public drinking water.

Irish Water carried out a number of measures to mediate the levels of iron, including flushing the system, air scouring, and allowing a hydrant to emit a consistent flow of water to lower the iron levels.

However, Cllr Connolly [pictured above] was critical of the latter method, especially in the context of “the necessity of conserving water. The pipe replacement works are estimated to take about three weeks.

Irish Water will also replace 772 metres of piping in Dalysfort Road in January. In June, the HSE, Irish Water, and the Galway City Council issued a Boil Water Notice to protect consumers due to the detection of E-Coli in the water supply in the area of Ard na Mara and Dalysfort Road. These works are expected to be completed in February 2022.
