A total of €9,984 has been allocated to various festivals around Galway city under the 2021 Local Community Festivals Grant Scheme.
The funding will be used to support the Westside Arts Festival, an Afrobeat festival, events at the city’s allotments, and a variety of Christmas and cultural events.
Twelve projects were approved by the Galway City Council to receive funding. Grants of €1,200 each were received by the Galway African Diaspora-Ireland, for the Galway Afrika Abu Festival, and by Westside Arts Festival for a Christmas concert.
Grant recipients
Grants of €1,000 each were given to the Galway Cycling Campaign, for a cross-city community cyclebus event; to the Galway Hooker Sailing Club for the launch of the restored Galway Hooker, 'Loveen'; and to the Galway Indian Cultural Community for community celebrations for 2021; and to Yoruba Heritage Art and Culture, for an Afrobeat music festival.
The Claddagh School of Music has received €850 towards a live Christmas concert; Coogan Park Residents Association were granted €800 for Coogan Park Community Memorial Day 2021; and the Ballybane Taskforce has received €564 for the launch of the Ballybane Community Café.
Grants of €500 each were given to Merlin Woods Allotments for the Merlin Woods Allotments Harvest event, and to Shining Light Galway for the Shining Light Community Physical Health & Well-Being Saturday Series. A grant of €370 was given to Shantalla Community Allotments for the Shantalla Allotments harvest festival.
