Pedestrian crossing ‘urgently needed’ at Blackrock, says Higgins

Councillor describes lack of safe road infrastructure at busy junction as ‘a travesty’

A pedestrian crossing is “urgently needed” at Blackrock in Salthill as the current roundabout/junction “presents a real threat” to those who cross it “on a daily basis”.

As a popular swimming destination, and a key point along the Salthill promenade, the crossing from Threadneedle Road onto the Prom is one of the most used by pedestrians in the area. However the area is also prone to heavy traffic at most times of the day, pedestrians are reliant on the goodwill of motorists letting them cross.

.

As a result, Fine Gael Galway City West councillor, Clodagh Higgins [pictured], has called on City Hall to construct a pedestrian crossing at the site.

“Currently there is no route that allows for safe pedestrian passage at Blackrock, across such a busy road junction,” she said. “The current set up is unsafe and is a liability, which is why a pedestrian crossing is needed urgently. The fact we don’t have the most basic of safe road infrastructure in place is a travesty. It is the Council’s responsibility to act now.”
