Spirited Galway WFC exit FAI Cup

It was a controversial encounter at Tolka Park

SHELBOURNE 1 GALWAY WFC 0

Ultimately it ended in a cruel FAI Cup semi-final defeat for Galway WFC at Tolka Park.

Noelle Murray's splendid goal proved to be the decisive blow as Shelbourne advanced to the decider.

It wasn't without controversy at the Drumcondra venue as Galway were reduced to 10 players in the 67th minute.

Julie Ann Russell's highly debatable second caution ensured Stephen Lally's outfit were forced to play the remainder of the game without the full complement.

Two members of Galway's technical staff were yellow carded shortly after illustrating the increasing frustration levels.

Organised and solid, Galway impressed throughout the opening period before Shels pounced in the 30th minute.

A delightful piece of skill from Noelle Murray was followed by an equally sharp finish which steered Noel King and Joey Malone's team in front.

Galway's enthusiasm and energy remained a feature of the game, but Shels still departed at the interval armed with the lead.

When the action recommenced Galway were unfortunate to lose Russell which was a significant setback.

Emma Starr forced Amanda Budden to make a fine reflex save in the 80 minute, while a deflected effort from Kate Slevin seconds later was another decent opportunity.

Shelbourne, with 1991 Galway United cup winning manager Joey Malone assisting Noel King, held out. A spirited and tenacious Galway side were left reflecting on what might have been.
