Children send love to grandparents during Positive Ageing Week

An innovative initiative led by COPE Galway, invites children to send cards to their grandparents, highlighting the impact of grandparents and older persons on our lives.

This Positive Ageing Week, children across Galway City and County are invited to write to grandparents and send cards to the older people in their lives in a powerful but simple act of kindness initiative being rolled out this week in local schools and libraries.

The aim of the project is to get young people thinking about the impact that their grandparents and other older role models have on their lives. Participants will be entered into a prize draw which includes a family voucher to Wildlands Adventure Centre.

“We live our lives on the shoulders of previous generations and this Positive Ageing Week we want to encourage everyone to take the time to acknowledge and thank older people who enrich our lives and communities enormously”, says Jacquie Lynskey, Head of COPE Galway’s Senior Support Service.

Anne Conran and her husband, Barry, were delighted to receive cards from her two granddaughters as part of Positive Ageing Week. She says that having their cards and artwork around the house always brings a smile to her face as she goes about her day.

Leonie Woutersen, Corporate Engagement Executive at COPE Galway acknowledged the role of local businesses and the community in supporting initiatives such as this one and thanked Maureen McKeown Real Estate, Charlie Byrnes Bookshop and Wildlands Adventure Centre for backing the Notecard Project. “We often see opportunities to make a difference beyond the services for which we receive state funding. In particular, Philanthropic support gives us the resources we need to extend on the services we offer within the Galway community – and it is a truly rewarding experience to be part of”, Leonie says.
