PBP Galway call for scrapping of plans for gas-fuelled power plant at Tynagh

Party wants to see phasing out of existing power plants and replaced by renewable energy production

“It beggars belief that consideration would be given to a fossil fuel power station which would increase emissions and set backwards efforts to reduce the impact of climate change.”

This is the view of People Before Profit Galway representative Adrian Curran, who was reacting to news of plans for the construction of a new gas-fuelled power plant beside the existing Tynagh power station near Loughrea.

PBP Galway is now calling on the Government, the Galway County Council, and An Bord Pleanála to block the plans to construct the plant at Tynagh.

“Every day we are seeing the effects of climate change around the world from wildfires and droughts to devastating storms and floods,” said Mr Curran. “The Government and local councils have to start taking this issue seriously and begin immediate action to reduce emissions and combat the effects of climate change. Such action must include a halt to construction of new fossil fuel power stations and phasing out existing ones to be replaced by renewable energy production.”
