Galway made radio drama to be broadcast on Newstalk

Órfhlaith Foyle’s May’s End charts a rural woman’s determination to keep her independence

A GALWAY made radio drama - recorded in the Flirt FM Studios in NUI Galway, and on location around the county - is being broadcast on Newstalk 106-108fm.

May’s End, written by the Galway poet, novelist, and short story writer Órfhlaith Foyle, can be heard this Saturday, October 2, at 9pm.

Set in early 1900s Ireland, it centres on a fiercely independent woman who rallies against traditional expectations. May is a ‘good cattle woman’, who swears and likes a drink, but she also assists her father James on the farm and at the mart. Her only friends are Elisabeth, the local school mistress and her little dog Pablo.

.

May’s independent life is frowned upon by her brother Jim, his fiancee Kate, and by her father. They want her to settle down and marry a local man, while Elisabeth wants May to marry her brother Theo; a horse dealer. When family deaths and the birth of a child cause great upheaval, May has to fight her corner and strive to hold onto her independence.

The cast are Tara Finn, John Burke, Gerry Howard, Joan Gildea, Eimir Creedon, Austin Prior and Gerry Ferguson. It was produced, recorded, and edited by Alan Meaney.

May’s End can be listened to at www.newstalk.com and as a podcast after the broadcast via www.newstalk.com/podcasts/drama-on-newstalk after the broadcast.
