Corrandulla teen hurled abuse at gardai

Hurling abuse at gardai will not be tolerated said Judge Mary Fahy this week after hearing how a teenager shouted personal insults after trying to help his brother during a fight in Eyre Square.

John Cahill (19 ) and his brother Gary Cahill (18 ) both with an address at Park, Corrandulla, appeared at Galway District Court last Monday and pleaded guilty to being intoxicated in a public place and to threatening and abusive behaviour on April 25, 2009.

Inspector Ernie White told the court that at 3.30am in Eyre Square John Cahill had been involved in an altercation with a number of males prompting his brother Gary to intervene. The court heard that when gardai arrived Gary Cahill had been very abusive to them shouting: “You retarded bullocks” and “f**k off, you prick”. Inspector White added that John had not been as abusive as his younger sibling and that the two defendants had no previous convictions.

Defence solicitor Tomas McHale said that the brothers had been out for the night and both were extemely intoxicated. He added that the young men were sorry for the difficulties they had caused.

“This type of abuse is not acceptable,” said Judge Fahy who then convicted Gary and fined him €500 with three months to pay. As John Cahill had been less abusive he was ordered to pay €300 to the court poor box and given the benefit of the Probation Act Section 1(1 ) therefore avoiding a conviction.
