Two men accused of €237,000 cheque scam

Two men accused of being involved in a scam in which a woman was induced into making out cheques amounting to €237,000 have been sent forward for trial.

The Galway District Court heard yesterday how Conor Murphy with an address at 116 Castlepark, Ballybane, and his co-accused Jimmy Murphy with an address at Mallow, Co Cork, were both served with the book of evidence.

Conor Murphy is charged with 24 counts of inducing the injured party to make out cheques payable to him on dates in 2006 and 2007 for the purposes of purchasing 35 acres of land at Moycullen, with the intent of causing loss to her, contrary to Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud ) Act.

The charges brought against Jimmy Murphy include four counts of allegedly making gain or causing loss by deception at the injured party’s address in Craughwell on February 1 and June 1 2007, and at Permanent TSB Bank, Eyre Square, on October 1 and November 1, 2007.
