Woodquay Park is set to be the location of a €1 million outdoor performance space, lighting installation, and hand-carved steel sculpture reflecting the stories and traditions of Galway.
Galway is one of seven locations chosen under Fáilte Ireland’s Urban Animation Investment Scheme, which aims to transform cities and towns with the addition of public art, light installations and performance spaces.
The project will involve a lighting installation featuring a hand-carved steel sphere, designed to reflect the stories and traditions of the city. It will also incorporate a traditional Galway hooker, and an intimate performance space. It is expected the project will be completed by the end of next summer.
'Ambitious and creative'
The investment has been welcomed by the Minister for State, and Galway West TD, Hildegarde Naughton. “The project is ambitious and creative, and will enormously enhance a beautiful part of the city,” she said. “It has the potential to make Woodquay an iconic part of Galway, and another outlet for culture and the arts.”
There was also a welcome for the project from Green Party Galway City Central councillor, and deputy mayor, Martina O'Connor. "I met with residents of Woodquay soon after being elected in 2019 to hear of their ambitious plans to update their park area," he said.
