Aine Doherty runs painting classes in Oughterard, Killannin, and Galway city. Her approach to teaching is simple and relaxed, and she welcomes everyone from complete beginners who have never held a paintbrush, to competent artists who use the facility as a comfortable setting to develop their creativity and improve their painting skills. As an artist herself, Ms Doherty is familiar with the painting process and has developed a programme which nurtures students' own intuition and sensibility.
"Developing and relying on your intuition through the painting process is something that can take years to accomplish but it does happen with experience and some guidance along the way," she said.
She believes that painting is holistically beneficial too, as it is both confidence building and soothing to the senses.
"I often get children starting off in my class who are very quiet and possess little belief in their abilities. It is lovely to watch them come out of their shell over time, as they express themselves in a fresh way using colour. This is often true with adult learners too. The small decisions that we must make throughout the development of a painting help us gain confidence in our ability to create something beautiful; there are major problem solving skills to be acquired here, and these skills will often filter into our day to day lives. It's so rewarding to watch their progression. Students often tell me how relaxed they feel after a class. Colours have a genuine effect on our nervous system, and painting can help us quiet our minds and transport us to a feeling of serenity as we get into a state of flow."
Aine Doherty currently teaches acrylic painting for children in Killannin Community Centre; a teen oil painting class along with evening and morning adult oil painting classes in The Courthouse, Oughterard; and morning and evening classes in her new venue in the city, Katie's Claddagh Cottage.
