The phenomenon of ‘one punch’ incidents that has become increasingly common in public order offences can cost not only lives, but the possibility of a conviction that will end careers and travel hopes, a local Joint Policing Committee meeting was told this week.
Cllr Liam Carroll told this week’s meeting of the Galway County Council JPC that young people need to be aware of the consequences of such an action, as it has become too commonplace in late night public order fracas.
“This is happening when testosterone-filled young males get involved in public order offences and throw a punch without thinking.
“Not only have we seen how this has led to serious injuries and deaths, but the message should go out loud and clear that if this happens and they get convicted, they will have a criminal record that will debar them from travel, and from careers. They have to think before they throw that punch and there is a need for a clear programme of education to get this message out there,” he said.
