For most, Galway’s medieval streets and tourist attractions are part and parcel of city life. Up until now, the city centre tourist trail was unofficially known as ‘The Latin Quarter’.
Thanks to a group of like-minded business people in the area and with support from Fáilte Ireland and Galway City Council, the area will officially adopt the name ‘The Latin Quarter’.
Geographically ‘The Latin Quarter’ is best defined by some of Galway’s most historic landmarks. Starting at St Nicholas’ Church it runs through Galway’s Saturday market and onto O’Brien’s Bridge. From there it follows the River Corrib down to the Spanish Arch where the Galway City Museum is located and then swings back up along Middle Street and turns up Buttermilk Lane where it joins the starting point.
The idea was conceived during preparations for the Volvo Ocean Race in order to boost quality tourist features in the city.
“The Latin Quarter in Galway is a magical place. From day-time to night-time it is buzzing with people who are enjoying what it has to offer”, explains Ronnie Greaney, Chairperson of The Latin Quarter Committee, adding that “the businesses in the area are now working together to manage its future.”
After last summer, we sat down together to look at any other opportunities that might exist throughout the year and it grew from there.”
