Launch of part-time courses in Galway Community College

Galway Community College of Further Education offers more than 40 part-time evening programmes. These courses cover many disciplines and currently cater for approximately 500 learners annually. There is a wide range of relevant accredited and general interest programmes available every September and January.

Why not sign up to pursue an interest or upskill by registering online for one of GCC's accredited courses as a way to spend those long and dreary winter evenings. You deserve it after all the restrictions over the past number of months. All courses are classroom based and taught by highly professional tutors who are masters in their field.

The college has a total of 40 courses on offer which run on Mondays and Tuesdays. The hobbies courses run for a period of eight weeks from 7pm to 9.30pm, and the accredited courses run for a period of 10 weeks from 7pm to 10pm.

You can apply online by visiting www.galwaycc.ie and selecting adult education part-time courses. Email any queries to [email protected]. Courses start Monday, September 20, and Tuesday, September 21.

Hobbies

GCC has added a variety of hobby courses for this semester, including jewellery making where you can design your own jewellery. The tutor, Berina Kelly, trained with the Crafts Council of Ireland as a goldsmith. Her work has been described as: ‘delicate, generous, yet imaginative;’ ‘exaggerating the more conventional elements of jewellery design;’ and ‘pushing the barriers of wearability, with the use of strong shapes, in delicate applications’. The college is also welcoming back oil and acrylic painting tutor, renowned artist Jennifer Cunningham, who has had solo exhibitions with the Galway International Arts Festival and the Royal Hibernan Academy.

If you are a new homeowner or doing renovations why not join the interior design course taught by Emily Hooks, who has 10 years’ experience as a Laura Ashley interior designer. Ms Hooks will also be sharing her passion for craft and design on the paper craft course. Commercial flower arranging will be delivered by a highly skilled florist tutor with more than 20 years’ experience running her own floristry business.

Other courses include healthy mind, healthy life with tutor Rita Healy, a warm, fun, positive woman with more than 10 years’ experience in the field of bio energy and life coaching. Diet health and well being will include practical sessions on how to read food labels and understanding healthy eating advice for different health issues, and this course is developed and provided by a registered dietitian.

Nurturing childhood development and play is a new course for September aimed at new parents, which is delivered by a tutor with more than 20 years’ experience running her own crèche and teaching Early Childhood Care modules.

The regular courses are also running which include language studies including beginners' Irish and Spanish, and Sign Language; and creative writing skills and camera creativity with tutor Martin Mc Donnell, an artist who mixes digital photography with his art in an experimental way. He also regularly teaches basic photography techniques, so those new to photography and photo editing are very welcome.

Accredited courses

GCC's QQI Level 5 and Level 6 modules are sought after by people working in the business sector who would like to upskill but often cannot commit to a full time award. This semester these modules include bookkeeping and payroll, HRM, managing people, business management, and customer service.

One module which has been in demand over the last number of years and which the college is offering again is mathematics QQI Level 5, which may be needed as an entry level requirement for specific third level college courses. There are additional modules in healthcare dietetics and nutrition.
